Are scales a bad idea?

I don't own a scale myself but I have started using the one at the gym more and more. I was thinking of buying a scale to use at home but I'm afraid that I'll become too obsessed over "the number." Has anyone else had this experience and if so, how did you handle it?

You should use a measuring tape instead. That way you don't won't get discouraged during times of bloating, etc. It will give you a more accurate idea of how you're actually doing size-wise. Only get a scale if you can be disciplined enough to only check once per week.

Yes! Obsessing over the number on a scale is counter-productive. You'll do more harm than good. Once a week gives your body time to adjust and let's you use it as a tool to keep yourself on the right path rather than something that could potentially derail your efforts.
