Party Stress

Having recently entered the maintenace phase of my new lifestyle plan (I hate the word diet) I'm still getting used to eating in social settings. It's (relatively) easy for me to control my eating at home because I can choose what I'm going to eat and how to prepare it. The problem is that I have some social committments coming up in the next few weeks and I'm starting to get stressed. I'm afraid that in this type of setting I am going to throw all my food rules out the window and do something I know I would regret later. I know you should always eat a little something before you go to an event so you don't go overboard, but are there any other tips I can use to stay on track?

Keep away from the bar. Alcohol adds empty calories and once you start drinking you're less likely to have the willpower to avoid all the snacks!

Try to avoid taking the all or nothing approach. You've obviously worked hard for your weight loss but just because you are in the maintenance phase now doesn't mean that all the hard work is behind you. Have a bite or two of the things you really want. That way you won't feel deprived and you'll be able to keep on track. Just make sure that when you do eat something it's because you really want it and not just because it's there.

Those are good tips and as someone who is dealing with the same problem I appreciate the advice too. But, on a related not, how do you handle the pushy hostess...you know, the one that practically forces you to taste everything and makes a big scene when you don't? This happens to me all the time and I can't imagine I'm the only one who's had this problem.

F----orget people like that! Just be honest. Tell them that you appreciate all their hard work and assure them that everything looks delicious but that you are trying to control your weight so you have to be selective. If they don't understand that then they are trying to sabbotage you and aren't worth your time.
